The Qrafty Woodworker - Brand Identity

Dubai
2020

The Brief
A Dubai woodworker came to me wanting to grow organically — no shopfront, no catalogue, no ad budget. Watch boxes, dressers and tables, made one at a time and sold by word of mouth. He needed a mark strong enough to sit on the work itself, and since his own name starts with Q, that letter felt like the obvious place to start.

The Process
I explored six routes before landing on the right one, I kept coming back to the Q itself: half the counter filled with figured grain, the tail redrawn as a mallet handle crossing it at an angle. One drawing, doing the letter's job and naming the craft in the same stroke. I built the whole system around three rules — grain over gimmick, handmade yet high quality, quiet not rustic — so it would survive being burned into oak just as easily as it worked on a business card.

The Solution
I built out the full identity: walnut and oxblood on linen, an editorial serif paired with a mono for specs, and a toolkit of 18 pictograms for tags, crates and social captions. The real test was the branding iron — burned into the base of a watch box, the monogram held every line. What the client valued most wasn't the logo on a screen, but the personal signature it gave each piece, tied back to his own initial.
